The Kautilya Society is a non-profit organization
founded in 1998 by professionals working in the fields of
philosophical anthropology, religious sciences, education, and communications.
Kautilya was a court advisor who lived in India during the 4th century B.C. He had sought
to persuade the King to exercise knowledge and wisdom to rule his subjects instead of
depending solely on military might. The King refused. To prove that physical force was the
most effective, he had Kautilya thrown out of the kingdom, and from the gated walls
tauntingly enquired, "What can your knowledge do for you now?"
-
- After taking an oath not to cut his hair
until he proved that knowledge was the stronger force, Kautilya harnessed his energies and
drove them towards developing his knowledge to its fullest potential. The outcome is known
as Kautilya's Arthashastra, a treatise on the means to govern.
He fulfilled his vow by educating a young man in these disciplines, who then overthrew the
King and installed a reign rooted in knowledge. By adopting the name Kautilya for our
Society, we hope that we may bear witness to such determination in reaching our own
objectives.
Our aim is to ensure that intercultural dialogue is a part of the process of development
in Banaras so that she may mould her own future. Though western funds, tourism and
technology are much needed in India, we are convinced that the West has just as much need
for the depth of human knowledge that is in Banaras. Therefore, we strive to promote this
exchange through responsible tourism, study tours and seminars, spiritual retreats and
occasions for dialogue.
The headquarters of the Kautilya Society is Ram Bhavan, a
house built in a traditional architectural style and situated in the heart of the ancient
city along the banks of the Ganga.
-
- We have tried to create an environment
conducive to research and dialogue, where we may introduce our members and guests, be they
Indian or western, scholars, artists, professionals or humble seekers, to others with
similar interests.
Networking people is an important part of our secretarial services.
At Ram Bhavan, members are connected with the local experts and organizations they need.
They may have their tours and travels arranged, and receive updated information on the
city's cultural events, academic calendar and other practical facts to make their stay
interesting and successful.
Our newsletter helps members stay in contact with one another
in order to share progress made in either their professional or personal research.
Correspondences between persons discussing the various aspects of a specific topic are
also welcome.
- We are convinced that such communication is a
good way for all of us to remain on our journey as well as raise international awareness
for preserving the cultural heritage of Banaras.
